How to plan any trip length

Field-tested playbooks — from a day out to a month on the road — plus the practices that save every trip.

Day tripOne city, one day

Plan it

• Pick ONE neighborhood or 2–3 nearby sights — not a checklist sprint.

• Book anything timed (towers, museums, trains) before you go.

• Anchor the day around one meal worth traveling for.

• Leave 2 hours unplanned — the best finds are accidental.

Pack it

• Small daypack only

• Water bottle & sunscreen

• Power bank

• Offline map of the area (download in Google Maps)

Weekend (2–3 days)One base, no hotel changes

Plan it

• Stay in ONE lodging — checkout hops eat half a day each.

• Day 1 icons, day 2 neighborhoods, morning 3 the market + departure.

• Check our Explore page for that month's crowds and festival dates.

• Pre-book the airport transfer for the late-night arrival.

Pack it

• Carry-on only — no checked bag

• 2 outfits + 1 spare, layers over bulk

• Meds & chargers in the daypack, never checked

• One dressier option for a nice dinner

One weekTwo bases max

Plan it

• Two cities max — a 7-day trip with 4 hotels is a moving exercise.

• Alternate: heavy sightseeing day then a slow local day. Burnout is real.

• Book intercity trains/flights first; everything else flexes around them.

• One "zero day" mid-trip: laundry, pool, wandering. Trust us.

• Use the Budget tab per-person view so nobody gets surprised.

Pack it

• A week fits in a carry-on with 4–5 outfits + laundry mid-trip

• Universal adapter + multi-port charger

• Copies of passport & visas (photo + printed)

• Basic meds kit: pain relief, rehydration salts, plasters

• Check the destination's "What to wear & pack" for the month

A month or longerSlow travel — regions, not countries

Plan it

• Pick a region (e.g. Vietnam north to south) instead of country-hopping.

• Book only the first week — plans always change once you land.

• Weekly rhythm: 2 sight days, 2 work/rest days, 3 wander days.

• Monthly stays unlock big lodging discounts — ask or filter for them.

• Watch visa day-limits on your trip page; set a calendar reminder.

Pack it

• Pack for ONE week regardless of trip length — laundry exists everywhere

• Second bank card + some USD cash stored separately

• Travel insurance covering the whole stretch

• eSIM with regional data (airalo/roaming apps) or local SIMs

• Leave 20% bag space — you WILL acquire things

Best practices, always

Check entry rules first

Every destination page and your trip details show visa/entry requirements with official government links. Verify them before booking anything non-refundable.

Card + cash split

Carry two cards in different bags plus a day's cash. Enable travel mode in your banking apps before leaving.

Go offline-ready

Download offline maps, save your lodging address in the local language, screenshot bookings — airports have the worst wifi at the worst times.

Insurance is not optional

A hospital day abroad can cost more than the whole trip. Annual multi-trip policies are cheap for regulars.

Use the trip checklist

Every trip has a Travel Checklist section — fill it the week before, tick it while packing, thank yourself at security.

Trust the month, not the brochure

Our Explore pages show real seasonal data per month — typhoon windows, monsoons, peak crowds. Plan around them, not around averages.
